Often known as tying the knot, handfasting symbolises the spiritual and symbolic joining of two people as they begin their journey together. It can be included as part of any wedding celebration.

Handfasting is an ancient, pagan‑inspired ritual that has become increasingly popular in personal and intimate ceremonies. It involves binding the couple’s hands with ribbon or cord to represent their commitment and unity. Although not legally binding, it is a beautiful way to express love in a non‑religious or alternative ceremony.

 

This ritual is frequently included in celebrant‑led weddings, but it cannot be performed in civil ceremonies conducted by a Registrar, as they must exclude all religious or symbolic content.

Please note: A celebrant led handfasting, is not legally binding and you will need to make the standard legal declaration and register your marriage with a registrar at the local registry office, usually a couple of days before your celebrant led handfasting ceremony but can be any time before or after.
